Will You Believe Me for an Audi?

Jasmine Fidow-Maiava

We are not asking for things we cannot see. We are asking for things that we are certain of. Things that we hope for. We are asking for that which has been revealed to us by the Spirit.

I’ve been visiting a friend who lives in a home with other disabled people. It’s on one of these visits to Amanda that Mary asked me a question that took me by surprise.

“What does your church think about LGBT Jasmine?”

“I don’t even know what that is,” I replied.

“I believe I am meant to be a boy and I know my church is totally against it. What do you think?”

OMG what a question is what I was thinking. The whole household quietened as they waited for my answer.

“I don’t know about my church Mary, but I do know that God loves you regardless.” I knew in my heart this is true but it still felt like such a lame response. It sounded like a typical Christian platitude that didn’t really hold any strength. It’s something we Christians are supposed to say.

As Mary continued, I could see a young lady who longed to be loved. Without directly saying it, she, like all of us, wanted to be the object of someone’s affection - to be held and adored, to be the apple of someone’s eye and to be able to reciprocate. Mary was looking for an unconditional connection to a love that would not be afraid of her physical disability.

After a very educational discussion (for me), Mary turns to me and asks,

“Will you be able to come and do a church service for us here in our home please? We can’t all go to church on a regular basis.”

“Sure, “I answered, “I will talk to my pastor about coming out to do one.” What a cop out I thought.

“We don’t know your pastor but we know you. Why can’t you do it?”

And there it was. Jesus might as well have asked me Himself - “Jasmine, will you feed my sheep?”

“Sure Mary, I would love to. Let’s organise one.”

Later as I contemplated the afternoon's events, I realised I had just fallen in love with a household of strangers who, besides their physical challenges, needed God’s perfect love, just like us.

Romans 11:36(NIV) For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen.

Whether you’re a prophet, pastor, evangelist, teacher, lawyer or artist, if you are a child of God then everything we say and do must be from a place of love. So many of us are trying to have faith without being settled in our own hearts about how God loves us! The truth is He is for us and is always with us! When our hearts are secure in the fact that we are loved, we then become powerful ministers of the gospel of LOVE. We can love beyond confused sexual identities; disagreeing liturgies and even sometimes violent cultural and religious differences.

When our hearts are unsure, our heads are double-minded.

When Mary asked me to do a service for their house, I offered our pastor because I didn’t know what to think about Mary wanting to transition to becoming a male. Can God love her through me even if I am clueless about what Mary is going through? Do I have to have an opinion on these matters? Do I have enough love to give, that would restore Mary’s heart to the point where her gender would not be the issue? Do I have His perfect, unconditional, transforming love in me, for me and for Mary?

His love may not make sense at times yet it will anchor us in our endeavours to embrace a hurting world into a love that is “as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave.” Song of Songs 8: 6

You and I are from this LOVE and are of this LOVE.

All we do must flow from this LOVE. Ministry from any other place is vanity.

If you don’t know this LOVE from Christ, you just need to ask for it then brace yourself for a journey of transformation. You can pray with me right now...

Dear Lord, I ask that you make your love known to me so that I may love myself by your grace and others to the same measure. I want to know your transforming love that I may become a vessel of the same. I give you everything that I think love is to make way for your truth and your love. Teach me through Your Word Lord, by Your Spirit and through your people. I give you my heart. Take your place. Amen

God bless you.
