11 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
Ephesians 4: 11-13
I love being an itinerant prophetic minister of the gospel. My heart is overwhelmed with His love as I watch their eyes well up on hearing their lover speak healing and restoration over them. As the groom whispers His inner most thoughts towards His beloved bride, she is lifted from a despairing doubt to courageous hope. It doesn’t matter that she can’t quite see it. His voice reassures her. When He speaks, she finds security. She is no longer afraid. When He speaks, she can see Him, and He is all they need. He is all we need.
The prophetic is first and foremost, communication between the lover and His beloved. It is the Creator expressing of His love for us, His creation.
Secondly, it is a gift of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor 12) and one of the offices Jesus gave to His followers (Eph 4:11-13), for the building up of the church.
The second is a manifestation of the first. The gift is an overflow the relationship.
The relationship builds up the individual. It builds our faith in God. It strengthens our identity in Christ. It secures us in His love.
The second is the articulation of the overflow.
Don’t run after the gift. Receive the giver of the gift. Listen to Him. Be loved by Him. Let Him love others, through you. That is the gift of prophecy.
We must understand the gift has been given to us, so we can BUILD. The King builds His Kingdom by building His people.
- Don’t build alone.
The gift of prophecy is at its best when demonstrated alongside the apostles, evangelists, pastors and teachers. Look for churches, organisations, groups where you can become part of the 5-fold ministry. Church pastors, don’t be afraid of the prophetic voice. We need each other to build the church.
2. Build something!
The gifts are tools for building so build. Build yourself up in the Lord. Build others up. Build safe places and spaces where people can encounter His presence. Build spaces for healing, worship, deliverance, business etc. Build schools. Build a people released into Kingdom resources and Kingdom purposes.
Build towards unity, maturity and fullness in Christ Jesus (Eph 4: 13)
3. Build anywhere and everywhere.
You don’t have to be in a Christian setting to build the Kingdom. I am blessed to run prophetic prayer clinics as a “spiritual alternative” to staff counselling for an organisation where not all staff are of the Christian faith. You have Christ in you. You can build the Kingdom wherever you are. Build your family, your friends, your colleagues
4. Build beyond you
Build knowing that you are co-labouring with Christ whose increase of His government and peace knows no end (Isaiah 9:7). You are building into eternity. You are building something that will outlast you. When you build with the Holy Spirit, what you create will be beyond your imagination, ability and resources (Eph 3:20). Don’t get discouraged or overwhelmed when you feel out of your depth. Instead, take a deep breath and enjoy partnering with the creator of the universe.
Next time you attend a prophetic meeting – have an expectation that you are being built up to become a building where others can be built up and released to build the Kingdom alongside you.
What has your relationship with God been building in you?
What are you building now?
