Proverbs 4:20-22New International Version (NIV)
20 My son, pay attention to what I say;
turn your ear to my words.
21 Do not let them out of your sight,
keep them within your heart;
22 for they are life to those who find them
and health to one’s whole body.
If x = our attention and y = our heart then
(x+y) to the power of GW (God's Word) = Life & Health
when we do not pay attention to God's Word and keep it in our heart then we get the opposite of Life & Health - death and sickness.
Surely it's not that easy!
On Sunday in church we were shown a beautiful cartoon illustration of what a blessing was. The story explained that a blessing is happiness that God gives us. It enables us to be happy despite what may be going on around us. This is what Jesus spoke of in Matthew 5. He said "blessed" are the poor in spirit, the sad and the weak - this means despite these labels, they have been given the ability to be "happy". But that's not all. It continues to say that "...theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven." Matthew 5: 10b (NIV)
I have met many who are well versed with their conditions and what the medical report says but cannot recall the promises of God for their situation.
I finished teaching the Healing workshop at New Wine Warkworth, to find several messages on my phone informing me that if my sister crashed again, the doctors would not resuscitate her. My heart sank. I wept. I had to put my teaching into practice.
When I focussed on the prognosis I became emotional and weak but when I recalled God's healing promises - I became strong.
Psalm 107:19-21New International Version (NIV)
19 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
and he saved them from their distress.
20 He sent out his word and healed them;
he rescued them from the grave.
21 Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love
and his wonderful deeds for mankind.
As I drove to the hospital, in between my tears, I had to continuously take the prognosis off the throne of my focus and put Jesus back on (He who is the promise).
My sister has been in and out of hospital 5 times in December and she has been in there for a month now. She has complex medical issues but we continue to send God's Word to her, that she would be healed.
We often lose heart when things don't go according to our plans. As I watch my sister battle all that is going on with her body - I can see a strong will to live - I can hear her humour amidst her pain - she closes her eyes as we pray and we remind each other of our love as I say good night and leave her to go home.
Maybe we have limited true LIFE and HEALTH to our physical ability or how we look or what we have. Maybe true Life and Health in Jesus is the ability to live, love and laugh despite what we have or don't have.
Blessed are the poor in spirit, the sad and the weak for the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to them. If you are poor in spirit, sad or weak - then you are blessed and the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to YOU!
