Matt scoops Levi up into his lap where he sits contently playing on his iPad. Little Esther is watching KidsTv on the computer as Amy serves up her delicious white chocolate brownies. Baby Micah is giggling as his Uncle Nauma entertains him with googly sounds and air lifts. Children’s toys and blankets are strewn across the floor. I love that Matt and Amy don’t rush to pick things up as we enter their home. The whole place is filled with family life and love.
“What’s God doing in the places that you go to around New Zealand Jaz? What’s He doing around our nation?” Matt asks
As I share some of our experiences from 2015, Matt’s eyes well up and by the time I finish, tears are streaming down his face.
“I knew it!” he says. “I knew God was doing something in New Zealand. I feel His love on me all the time. I can’t believe I never knew this before. His love grips me and I find myself often crying, overwhelmed by it. “
He pauses and takes a deep breath, “I’m loving our new church. I am learning so much about God and how much He loves us. I can’t believe I never knew this before.” He pauses to take another deep breath and to wipe his face. “I gave 30 years of my life to the church I grew up in and the one we attended previously but only now I am experiencing His love for me and for others.”
“Imagine how many more there are out there who are in the place you were Matt? Faithfully serving in church for years and never encoutering the personal and transforming love of God?” I reply
This causes Matt to cry even more and he asks “What can I do?”
Matt and Amy share how at times the love of God is so strong, Matt cannot help but share it with his work colleagues. He’s been led at times to feed the homeless. The Lord has put on their hearts to buy groceries for people even though they themselves are a young family on one income.
I left Matt and Amy’s house so filled with faith for this year, for ministry and for life. God's love had gripped me again, just as it has this young couple. Matt’s simple question was a loud reminder of why I do what I do. It was the trigger I needed to set up off to face 2016 with confidence in God’s love not just for me, but for everyone.
What can I do?
Speak, demonstrate, manifest and grow in God’s love! That is the mission.
With LOVE unravelling and propelling us from the inside, HOPE before us and FAITH in Christ in hand, Nauma and I prepare, for another year, to journey across Aotearoa to set as many Matt’s and Amy’s free into the transforming love of the Father.
Psalm 89New International Version (NIV)
A maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite.
1 I will sing of the Lord’s great love forever;
with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known
through all generations.
2 I will declare that your love stands firm forever,
that you have established your faithfulness in heaven itself.
